A Lesson from the Grass

There is luscious green grass everywhere, a long-awaited sight. I love to walk bare feet in it or lie on its’ soft spikes.  Most of us never think much about grass, we just know it turns brown as winter nears and it turns green in the Spring.  We take for granted its’ commonness and rapid growth. We’ve come to think that grass grows of itself, and that God has nothing to do with such insignificant strings of grass, which today is and tomorrow is cut down and thrown away. We often think of God as being so far away and busy that He has no time to look after the small details of His world.  We forget that looking after and caring for all His creation and creatures, from the greatest to the least, is His special work.  What makes God so great is His ability to handle the greatest feats like keeping the stars and planets in place, and yet still paying close attention to the tiniest details, like the growing of grass.

We rarely do grasp in wonder at the appearance of grass, yet maybe we should. There is a wonder about even grass. Remember when the Word of God said, “let the earth bring forth grass,” (Genesis 1:11).  His Word is still causing the earth to bring up grass.  Have you ever noticed a tiny blade of grass or corn push its’ way up to the surface, in spite of heavy clods of dirt?  Have you ever seen a tiny sprout so tender it cannot support its own weight, it barely has color, and is made up of mostly water?  If you crushed it, only moisture would be left on your hand.  Yet this same tiny thing, a blade of grass, can push up through dirt ten-thousands of times its’ own weight.

Where does grass get that kind of power, from itself? Try it and see. Cut a full-grown blade of grass and cover it with a small amount of dirt and see what will happen, nothing.  Now take a paper-thin blade and see if it will stand upright in your hand.  It can’t, there is scarcely anything that is weaker. Yet, just a few minutes before it was standing tall.  Talk about a miracle? What is the power seen in the grass? It’s the power of God’s Word.  There is no power in the grass itself, but that feeblest instrument is used to display to every man, woman, boy and girl the mighty power of God’s Word.

Really, what’s the big deal about God causing the grass to grow?  It is a reminder that helps us recognize God’s power in small things. Since God takes the time to make grass grow, surely He will do for us what we need.  We are as weak as grass, we have no power in and of ourselves, although we would like to think so.  “All flesh is grass” (Isaiah 40:6).  Any life that we have, any power that we have access to is from God.  That’s both a very humbling, yet uplifting thought. I am as a blade of grass, but God cares so tenderly for me and gives me His life and power to push up through the many deep dark hurdles of life.  So, although I have absolutely no power in myself; still I am able to do all things through Christ, who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13).

Now we can better understand Paul’s response at the Words of God in 2 Corinthians 12:9-10, “And He (God) said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for My strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I (Paul) rather glory in my infirmities (weaknesses), that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.”

Take courage, brother, sister, like dirt, life weighs down heavy upon all of us, and unfortunately that probably won’t change this side of heaven.  But for now, we are so blessed to have a God who specializes in making the impossible, possible, making a way out of no way, and doing for us that which we cannot do for ourselves. Don’t be mad that God compares you and me to weak grass, just thank God that He uses our weakness in which to display His power and His strength. Yes, our weakness is a fact, but it is not a disability if we let God’s strength work in us.  I believe God really wants us to get this point deep into our minds and hearts, maybe that’s why there is so much luscious green grass everywhere. Enjoy it, and remember the same Word of God that causes the grass to break through the dirt is powerful enough to bring you up and through whatever weight, problem, or situation you face in life.
